Giving back at Christmas

Christmas time is renowned for the ‘season of giving’. I love to use this time of year to reflect upon what I have and not to dwell on what I don’t, by remembering all the good that I have in my life.

Now you may have had the good, the bad and the ugly this year and chances are things may not have always been perfect, but you are probably doing a lot better than most. Be grateful for all the good in your life and focus on what you have to be thankful for, and maybe how you can ‘give back’ to those less fortunate at Christmas time. Below are some ideas on how you can ‘give back’ during the festive season. Giving back your time and kindness could ultimately lead to making a difference in another individuals life.

Ideas of how you can give back:

  • Random act of kindness – bake and give to a friend who needs cheering up
  • Donate money to a good cause
  • Give a gift to your mail carrier
  • Smile – give back during Christmastime and smile all December long
  • Volunteer – help out in a charity shop or an all-night shelter for the homeless
  • Be kind to others
  • Sing Christmas carols at a nursing home

Deciding to give something back is half the battle. Once you have made the decision, the hardest step is to implement it. Take the plunge and make Christmas 2018 one to remember for all of your giving and unconditional, unrelenting love.

Many of us believe we have lost the real meaning of Christmas, to consumerism, so it is even more important that we guide our children not to lose sight of Christmas. As parents, we have to help them to understand why we celebrate it and how we can ‘give’ to others to enable them to have a meaningful Christmas. I personally like to shift the focus from receiving gifts and the “I want this”, during the festive season, to emphasising ‘sharing’.

Sharing is caring and what better time to do just that, at Christmas time.
